During World War II, a battle-weary US Major (BURT LANCASTER) takes over a 10th century Belgian castle as a potential strong-point. Its owner (JEAN PIERRE AUMONT) is an unworldly aristocrat, more concerned with his family lineage and his priceless collection of art
